Reporting from CloudExpo 2010 in NYC

Monday through Wednesday, April 19-21, I’m at CloudExpo 2010 in New York City. I’ll be posting my thoughts of the conference in general and particular sessions as time permits. First, let’s start with my overall impressions upon arriving …

Overall, Javits Convention Center is a nice facility. It sits on the Hudson River waterfront, and there’s easy access to and from the place, including ferry access to New Jersey locations. It was a bit confusing when I first arrived to register for the show because the center is hosting multiple events concurrently — my stomach dropped because I thought for a moment that I planned a trip to NYC for the wrong dates!

Relative to other conferences I normally attend such as Oracle OpenWorld, this convention is small, which is both good and bad. Good because you have easier access to people you would like to meet. Bad because there’s less buzz. I’d guess the overall attendance on Day 1 to be approximately 1200 to 1500 people. The keynote session room was completely full for the opening keynote address.

Speaking of Oracle, they have a huge presence at the show. The opening keynote was by Oracle executives, red Oracle cars outside, and the Oracle company name is all over the place. Is Oracle the company trying to offset Larry Ellison’s well-known distaste for the emergence of cloud computing? If you don’t know what I’m referring to, just go to YouTube and type in “Larry Ellison cloud computing”, watch, and listen. Larry is entertaining, as always.
