Database.com’s Creating Quite a Buzz

On December 7, 2010, salesforce.com announced Database.com, an enterprise-grade cloud Database as a Service (DbaaS) offering. This true cloud database service is powered by the same, proven database system that powers everything in the salesforce.com stack, currently serving upwards of 10B transactions/quarter.

Personally, I’m buzzing over this announcement. Why? Because (disclaimer) I now work for salesforce.com and was hired to help get the word out about this great new cloud database service.

But I’m not the only one. Database.com is creating quite a buzz in various circles like blogs and news sites. Just do a quick Google search and you’ll see what I mean.

What’s also interesting is that a partner ecosystem is already starting to take shape around Database.com, and ecosystems are an important part of what’s necessary to make a cloud platform or service successful. Database.com already has three partners and we’re starting to hear about more coming soon: follow the Database.com blog to keep up with this information.

Here are three key points to remember about Database.com.

  • Automatic Administration: no more worrying about installation, patching, upgrades, backups, data replication, disaster recovery, scalability configuration, etc.
  • Open: use whatever language you want (Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby), whatever platform you want (VMforce, Heroku, Amazon AWS, Google AE), whatever device you want (desktop, mobile, tablet)
  • Social: every record has feeds, following model, status updates, etc.
